Eroica Britannia Routes
Tideswell lies on both the long and the short L’Éroica Britannia routes. You’ll leave the relatively level Monsal Trail and climb out of the Wye Valley before entering the village of Tideswell.
You’ll notice immediately that this isn’t some ordinary village. You’ll arrive during our annual “Wakes and Well-Dressing” week, where the village is out to party and many visitors join in too.
You’ll cycle past two decorated wells, before swinging round to the “Cathedral” and the feeding station. There will be marshals on hand to point you in the right direction to our secure bike storage area, before you wander off to sample some of our local food and drink in the shadow of the towering church. You’ll be able to choose food from a range of stalls before exploring the lovely village.
Once you are refreshed, marshals will be on-hand to guide you on your way with a cheery wave.
Tideswell is a village of 1700 people and boasts some fabulous shops, some beautiful houses and delightful residents. It is a place that is proud of its local food and drink and keen to show it off to visitors. And who better than the riders of L’Éroica Britannica.
Tideswell is home to the magnificent Cathedral of the Peak, the Parish Church of St John, and the Taste Tideswell Project that promotes local food and shopping – (tastetideswell.co.uk).
In the village, and surrounding area, we also have a range of accommodation including bed and breakfast, self-catering cottages, bunk barns and campsites.
Tideswell is only 10 kilometres from L’Éroica Britannia’s start and finish point in Bakewell so is a great place to locate yourself whilst in the Peak District.
For more details of how we can help you make the most of your L’Éroica Brittanica experience please read on.
Wakes and Well Dressing
Your arrival in Tideswell coincides with the opening weekend of our traditional Wakes and Well Dressing festival. Well Dressing is unique to The Peak District and originated as a pagan thank you for the life-giving waters of the local wells and streams.
Today the celebration has evolved into a magnificent floral display and Tideswell’s Wells are the best you’ll see anywhere, especially the main well in the centre of the village. Be sure to slow down and take a look as you cycle up through the village. For more details of wakes week – www.tideswellwakes.info.
